We love our Monarchs!A distinctive species of brushfoot butterfly, Mourning Cloaks are an exciting sight whenever seen gliding along the trails in early spring and fall. Not as common as other species of brushfoot, but able to persist in nearly any habitat, Mourning Cloaks appear a rich maroon, brown color above with distinctive yellow coloration outlining each of the wings. Due to the nature of their life cycle, Mourning Cloaks are one of the first species of butterfly we can see after the first spring thaw. By June and July, adults of the year will arrive at their staging grounds, enter another period of aestivation, or the equivalent of hibernation, before emerging in early fall and continuing the cycle come winter. The larval food for Mourning Cloak caterpillars includes Willows, cottonwoods, elms, and birches. So, when we finally see the first sign of spring, get outside and keep your eyes out for the first emerging butterflies of the year!#CapeMay #Butteflies ... See MoreSee Less
